A Family Shoot at Bondi Beach, Ten Years in the Making

Can we talk about backyard sessions for a second,

Can we talk about backyard sessions for a second, because I don’t think enough people know this is an option.

You don’t need your perfect dream home. You don’t need to tidy up. Half the magic in these photos is a plastic trike, a hose and a very serious water pistol.

All you need is the place they actually are at right now. The couch they jump on. The grass they run across barefoot. The window they press their hands against when someone pulls into the driveway. In ten years, that’s the stuff you’ll ache for, not a nice backdrop.

And it’s the easiest session there is. No packing the car, no tantrums in the car, and no wrangling anyone into the good clothes. The kids are at home, so they’re themselves. That’s the entire trick.

Summer evenings here are made for it.

Long golden light, sprinklers on, everyone barefoot.

Comment or DM me “Joy” and I’ll send you everything. 🧡

So school holidays are coming to an end, and for mummas and caregivers, that can feel like a relief in some part, and a breath of sadness in another.
When your kids are little, school holidays are a proper juggle. From play dates, to car lifts, to “I’m bored,” to the sibling fights.
But it can also be a blessing. Less nagging to get to school on time. Less lunch boxes to make and empty, less emails from the school or the WhatsApp group, more time with your favourite little people.
And look at this mumma. Climbed all over, and loved deeply, all holidays long. One day life is going to feel a lot quieter.
So I’d love to hear, are you...

I never got maternity photos, I barely have any photos at all from when I was pregnant.

This is where I sound old, but back then, maternity photos all looked the same. A pastel sky (often fake), a long stretch of beach, a piece of fabric draped over the bump flying perfectly in the wind. That wasn’t for me, so I just didnt do it.
What I didn’t understand at 29 was that I wasn’t saying no to a style. I was saying no to ever seeing myself pregnant again.

So if you’re waiting for the right style, the right photographer, the right version of yourself... please don’t do what I did (or didn’t do).

There is a way to capture this chapter in a way that feels like you. I promise there is, because that’s the entire reason I shoot the way I shoot.

I’ve heard it a hundred times, and I’ve been there

I’ve heard it a hundred times, and I’ve been there too. But your kids don’t see what you see. They never have.
So this is your little nudge from someone who stayed out of the frame too long… get in there with them. I’ll make it easy and fun, just capturing you being you.
Comment or DM me “Joy” if you’re ready and I’ll send you everything. 🧡

When my kids were little like yours are now, I was

When my kids were little like yours are now, I was totally in my element in motherhood. But I do have a few regrets. Not many, but there are things I really wish I’d known at the time.
The main one... this chapter as a mum of little kids can feel slow. It can truly feel like it will last forever, or that by the time they’re all grown up, you’ll be ready to let go.
But far out, they really do grow too fast. I can’t tell you how many times people would stop me in the street and warn me of this, and I really didn’t take it in.
If I can convince you of one thing in my career as a family photographer, I hope it’s this… time is so precious, and it honestly goes so fast.
So if I could have my time over again... I’d be present more. I’d put my phone away. I’d give them my full attention when they wanted it. I’d stop sweating the small stuff, and I’d treat every moment like it was the last.
And I know I’m a photographer, so this is kind of a predictable one, but I seriously would get in the frame with them way more than I did. Because I promise you, when their 16th, 18th, 21st birthday comes around, you WILL kick yourself when you’re searching for shots where you’re in these memories with your beautiful kids.
I know, because I just went searching for photos for this post. Thousands of the boys, thousands of their dad. Yet, some years, not a single one of me.
Because far out, I loved being their mum. I still do. I just know now how fast it goes.
