This was the second shoot at RISE Blue Mountains, This was the second shoot at RISE Blue Mountains, and their little guy was a little shy when they arrived. Shy, clinging to mum, a little scared of the camera. So I showed the girls what I always do first. Forget the photos. Win over the kid. Those first few minutes aren’t about getting the shot. They’re about being silly and building trust through play. Because the second that little one decides you’re fun and safe, everything changes. By the end of the session he was our best little buddy. Running around, adventuring, keeping mum and dad on their toes with his fearless energy. And then the photos came easy, they always do when the energy is right. This is the stuff we work through at RISE. Not just how to shoot, but how to lead a session so it flows for everyone in it. Melbourne is next. Here’s something I told my RISE students before we Here’s something I told my RISE students before we even picked up a camera last week in the Blue Mountains. Your clients booked you for great photos. But they’ll book you again if they also have fun while you take them. Before this shoot, I walked the girls through the whole house. Where the light was working, where it wasn’t working for me, where I’d place the family, what I’d do if the light shifted. All the things I want them to start seeing the moment they step into a client’s home. But what I stressed most… Even when I’m chasing a moody, quiet, snuggly frame, the shoot itself has to be FUN. I’m never asking a family to just stare in a direction and hold it. I’m giving them games. Distractions. Little moments that pull real expressions out of them without them realising they’re being “posed. That’s the difference between a family who books you once for nice photos, and a family who books you every year because the experience felt like magic. This is the kind of stuff we go deep on at RISE. Not just my shoot workflow and prompts, but everything I’ve learned running a photography business for 14 years. Happy Mother’s Day for yesterday, mummas. Sharing Happy Mother’s Day for yesterday, mummas. Sharing some beautiful frames from my Motherhood Minis. Us mums need to remember to get in the frame with our babies. You will never regret it, trust me. This period of time can feel slow at times, but I promise… once they’re all grown up, you’ll wish it lasted forever. I’m always conscious of those who find days like yesterday hard due to loss, estrangement, distance, and many other reasons. It’s only when they are all grown up that you can truly appreciate this coming through in the photos you have with them. Xx
This is what family photos should feel like. Defin This is what family photos should feel like. Definitely not stiff, or posed, or the dreaded everyone looking at the camera with forced smiles. Just you, all of you, together, laughing, connected and real. Because the photos you’ll treasure most aren’t the ones where everyone sat still and behaved perfectly. They’re the ones where you can feel the joy. Where you remember the sounds. Where the chaos and the love and the realness of your family shines through in every photograph. That’s what I’m here to capture. Not perfection, and definitely not a performance. Just you being exactly who you are when no one’s watching. The piled on-top of each other ther moments. The belly laughs. The messy, beautiful, authentic truth of your family. That’s the good stuff. And that’s what you’ll look back on in 20 years and feel in your bones.
